‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’—What We Know So Far

Guest Author: Jessica Gervais

The official trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ has finally been released and has taken the internet by storm. In the two and a half minute trailer, fans of the iconic film series are left with some serious questions and their answers can have even more serious implications. Tickets were available for sale early October 2017, though the movie itself won’t hit theatres until December 15th, 2017. And while the trailer itself reveals very little about the actual narrative of the The Last Jedi, we’re given quite a few brow-raising scenes to obsess over for the next few months.

Luke is training Rey At the 0:25 mark, we see meaningful glimpses of Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill) training Rey (Daisy Ridley). They’re seen using the force to reach out and seem to be on the run. It looks like we can expect to learn a lot more about Rey and her capabilities. In one notable scene, we see her raising pebbles around her head using the force. An obvious and clever nod to Luke’s training on Dagobah. We’re definitely excited to see the dynamic between these two characters in the film!

Warning! Spoilers for The Force Awakens Ahead

At 1:17-1:25 we get a glimpse of what might be the death scene of General Leila (played by the late Carrie Fisher, RIP) at the hands of none other than Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver). In the trailer, Ren hesitates rather noticeably over a red button that may be aimed directly at his mother’s ship. If there was ever a reason to hesitate, that’d be it considering that Ren has already killed his father in the previous film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Clearly, Ren has some qualms about being an orphan. Will he pull the trigger? Kylo Ren has seemed at odds with his decision to join the dark side. He’s visibly uneasy about firing so whether he decides to annihilate the ship or not is left to be seen until December 15th. If he goes through with it, the First Order has a serious tactical win and will probably sever Ren’s final tie to his past.

Familiar Characters and New Faces
The trailer gives us quick clip of Finn, the defective storm trooper who was left unconscious in The Force Awakens and probably suffering from a serious back injury. We can expect him to be back on his feet in The Last Jedi, but what else can we look forward to? Will Finn continue to run away from the First Order or will he finally join the resistance?

Other characters like the lovable droid BB-8 will return to the series while new characters like Rose (played by Kelly Marie Tran) will be introduced. We don’t know much about Rose’s character other than she’s probably humanoid working as a maintenance worker in the Resistance. The film will also be visiting a new planet called Crait, a mineral planet that houses an abandoned rebel base.
