Cleaning up paintbrushes can be a real pain, especially if you have been using oil-based paint. Because of this, purpose-made brush cleaners exist. But how good are they? and how do you use paintbrush cleaner?
This is the cleaner I am using for this test. This paintbrush cleaner is a thin solvent-based liquid that removes wet paint quickly from brushes, rollers and pads. Works on emulsion, spirit-based paints, varnish and is water washable. Contains conditioner to prolong brush/roller life. Cleans up with water.
Lots of people just throw away paintbrushes after they have used oil-based paint, and I must admit I was also guilty of that previously. But as times have changed and I have started to use better quality brushes and cut down on my waste it has become more and more important to me to clean my brushes properly. I have always used white spirit to clean my brushes, shunning paintbrush cleaner as an expensive, pointless alternative. But I was wrong, now I have seen the light and used a proper brush cleaner I wish I had made the swap years ago. Yes, it is more expensive than white spirit but it is soo much easier, quicker and better!
- Glass Jar
- Paint brush (with paint on preferably!)
- Paint Brush Cleaner
Step 1 – Add Brush Cleaner to Glass Jar
Just pour some brush cleaner into a glass jar, do not use plastic as some of the chemicals in the brush cleaner can react with certain plastics.
I added just enough to cover all of the bristles on the brush.
Step 2 – Work The Brush Into The Cleaner
Now put your brush into the cleaner, you will notice the colour change straight away as it starts to clean the paint off of your brush.
Really work the bristles of the brush into the bottom of the jar, this will really help clean all of the paint out of every nook and cranny.
Step 3 – Admire The Cleanliness!
Not a true step, but, look how clean that brush is! This is just from dunking it in the jar and working the bristles about, so much less effort than white spirit.
Step 4 – Rinse With Water
Now to complete the task simply rinse your brush through with water and you are done! I couldn’t believe how quick and easy it was to clean brushes with this stuff, never again will I be using white spirit.
