Is Masking Tape Waterproof?

This is a question I see asked a lot, so let’s answer it the only way I know how, with some testing. I am going to do a couple of different tests to find out whether masking tape is waterproof or not.

Testing Whether Masking Tape is Waterproof

so how am I going to test this? well to start with I will see whether masking tape can be used to patch a hole. Then I will see if masking tape will stand up to the elements and whether it can be used outside or not.

Test 1

So to start with let’s see if you can use masking tape to patch a hole and stop a leak. I got an old milk carton and punctured some holes in it. I am then going to patch these holes with masking tape and see if this can prevent the milk bottle from leaking.

Now it’s time to cover these holes with three different masking tapes. i am using different masking tapes to see whether this makes any difference. Will one of the masking tapes be waterproof while the others aren’t?

Here we have all of the holes covered. I have made sure the tape is firmly down and fully covering all of the holes.

Let’s fill this milk bottle up and see if the masking tape can hold back the water.

Well, that’s a definite no from the yellow ProDec advanced masking tape. As soon as the water started going into the milk bottle there was a very large leak from this tape. As you can see in the photo the water is flooding out from under this masking tape.

Can the other masking tapes fare any better? Let’s have a look.

It’s a no for the blue tape, which has also sprung a large leak. The water is running down behind the tape from the hole and then coming out of the bottom in a constant stream.

And then finally the white tape goes. This tape did last quite a bit longer than the other two masking tapes and when it did go it’s only a small leak.

So you could possibly say that this masking tape is water-resistant. I can confidently say that none of them is waterproof though.

Test 2

So we have seen how the tapes hold up when trying to patch a leak, but how well do they fare when used outside?

to find out I have slapped a few different masking tapes down on this wheelie bin and left them outside. Time to see how the masking tapes got on.
