Hammerite Thinners Alternative
So you want to thin down some Hammerite, possibly to spray it. But official Hammerite thinners are expensive, so what are the alternatives? well, let’s have a look at what you can use instead of the official Hammerite thinners.
White Spirit Instead of Hammerite Thinners
So the obvious place to start when looking for an alternative to Hammerite thinners would be white spirit. Hammerite is a solvent base so you would think you could thin it with white spirit. Well, I do have a full article dedicated to that very question which you can find here. But let’s quickly get into it below.
There is only one way to answer this question for sure, and that is to test it. I grabbed some Hammerite and white spirit and tried to thin and then spray it.

To start with we will thin some Hammerite hammered and see if it still achieves the same hammered finish once thinned down.
So as you can see the white spirit has definitely thinned the paint down and seems to be working really well as a Hammerite thinners alternative.
So it seems to have thinned well so far but how well will it paint?

In order to test this, I am going to paint this rusty jerry can.

Here you can see the hammered Hammerite on the jerry can. It has done the hammered effect but it does seem a little less than usual.
So we have shown that hammered Hammerite can be thinned using white spirit as an alternative to Hammerite thinners. Now let’s have a look if Hammerite smooth can also be thinned down.

And here you can see that this has painted just fine after being thinned with white spirit.
Conclusion
If you need an alternative for Hammerite thinners, either due to cost or availability then I think this test shows that white spirit works brilliantly. If you need an alternative to official thinners you can use white spirit.
