What Drill Bit For Wood?

If you are drilling some wood then you will no doubt want to have the right drill bit for the job. but what is the right drill bit for wood? Let’s have a look.

Types of wood drill bit

So when it comes to wood drilling bits there are tonnes of different types of bits. There are wooden drill bits for a wide range of differing tasks. So I will break down what wood bit to use into the different subcategories.

The drill bit that you will use most commonly in wood is a brad point drill bit. This looks like a regular drill bit with a small spike on the end to help locate it. Most regular drill bits will work in wood, this is because a drill bit designed to go through metal won’t have much trouble going through wood.

Wood drill bits though do tend to be sharper than metal drilling bits. This is because metal drilling bits need to be tough but they don’t need to be too sharp as this sharpness would just get dulled off very quickly.

Brad Point Drill Bit

Brad-point drill bits are probably the most common type of drill bit for drilling wood. The brad point refers to the point on the end of the drill bit. This point is used for lining the drill bit up.

You can press the brad-point into the wood, precisely on the point you want to drill. What this means is you can get your drill hole exactly where you want. Regular drill bits without the brad-point have a tendency to slip and move a little when you start spinning the drill bit up.

Spade Drill Bit

Spade drills bits are just what they sound like, they have a large spade-shaped drill bit on the end rather than a spiral.

They are commonly used for drilling larger holes than regular drill bits. A spade drill bit is very common for drilling things like lock holes in doors for example.

Auger Drill Bit

An auger wood drill bit is for boring out large, deep holes. These are larger spiral bits that are designed to bore out really long holes.

Auger drill bits are often quite long and go up to very large sizes. The spiral on the drill bit is designed to help remove material out of the hole as you are drilling to prevent it from clogging up.

Hole Saw Bit

A hole saw is a special type of drill bit for sawing wide but shallow holes. Because of the design of the bit, they bottom out quite quickly and therefore cannot drill too deep.
