Is Masking Tape Flammable?

Masking tape is your best friend when decorating, allowing you to get crisp, clean lines with your paint. But do you need to be careful using it anywhere where it may catch fire? Is masking tape flammable? Let’s find out.

So, is masking tape flammable?

Yes, masking tape is incredibly flammable. It is a mixture of paper and adhesive and will go up in flame very quickly.

Testing the flammability of masking tape

So, that’s a pretty solid answer above, how come I am so confident? Well, I set fire to some masking tape, and to say it went up easy would be a massive understatement.

This stuff is really flammable, so make sure you don’t use it anywhere near naked flames such as candles. Masking tape will go up in a ball of flame before you even have a chance to react.

So yeah, pretty scary stuff. Imagine if that was a full wall with masking tape running the entire length. You could be in big trouble pretty quickly if one part of the tape was to catch fire.

I must admit I didn’t realise just how flammable masking tape was until I did this test. I will be really careful moving forward to make sure I never use masking tape anywhere near an open flame or big heat source.
