Wall Smoothing Paint, Which One To Choose?

Bumpy walls are a staple of any older home. And bar getting a plasterer in they can be a little tricky to fix.

That is where today products come in, wall smoothing paints. These products are designed to be applied like paint but fix any cracks and bumps in your walls.

Old plaster walls like this are a common sight

But which one to choose? Well, we have done the research to answer that question for you. So read on to find out which wall smoothing paint I recommend.

The Best Wall Smoothing Paint

Gun to my head, pick one of the smoothing paints. I would go with the below paint from Everbuild.

I have used this quite a bit myself and I am always surprised at just how much it can hide.

Don’t however think that this will fix major problems. It is only paint at the end of the day, a thick paint, but a paint nonetheless.

Everbuild Filler Coat is a thick base coat for use on imperfect surfaces, such as walls and ceilings, prior to painting.

It will simply cover and seal in one application. The filler Coat is supplied as 5 litres in a plastic re-sealable tub for easy use and storage.

Filler Coat hides and obliterates areas that have been filled badly at some stage, as well as covering and preventing the reappearance of hairline cracks.

Other Products

There are tonnes of options when it comes to paint on fillers. I recommend the Everbuild but to be honest there is not much between them.

If you fancy trying out a different paint then I will list some of the other popular choices below.

Covers hairline cracks, minor imperfections and filled areas. Prepares walls prior to painting. Covers strong colours in one coat and is easy to apply with a brush or roller.

How To Apply Wall Smoothing Paint

The application of all of these smoothing paints is really simple. You just paint them on, however you normally would.

Whether that be brush or roller, either will work. I would recommend using a roller and cutting in at the edges with a brush.

Take extra care to avoid drips. This stuff is thick and can cause drips if applied in too greater quantity.

How Much Can They Cover?

Small cracks and old patches can be hidden by these paints. Just don’t ask too much of them and you will be fine.

Larger cracks or big dips will not be filled by this paint. Instead, you should use a normal wall filler first, then add this paint over the top.

So as long as you don’t go in with high expectations then these paints will work well for you.

Do they hide stains?

These are not specialist stain-blocking paints, like say Zinsser Cover Stain, but they are very thick.

As long as the stain isn’t of the penetrating type, as a water or nicotine stain is, then they will cover it.

They are really good at blocking out dark colours. If you have really dark wallpaper or maybe a painted black wall then they could be a great choice.
